Why was a pet blackbird arrested in 1736 – and charged on TWO counts?

Why couldn’t West Bow residents sleep on visits to the countryside?

What made senior judge Lord Coalstoun’s wig ascend from his head, as if to heaven?

Who was jeering the city’s defenders during the Jacobite Rising of 1745?

What were the magic words to prevent being showered with sewage in old Edinburgh?

All will be revealed!

You can feel the history all around you in Edinburgh’s Old Town – but 7 Hills can take you right inside Edinburgh’s incredible story, as we explore key parts of our oldest street, the storied Royal Mile. Your guide Dr Moray Grigor has gone deep into Auld Reekie’s history books, to find some of the most unusual and fascinating stories of the city you will ever hear – stories largely unknown now even to Edinburgh locals.

Interweaved with our tales, you’ll also hear some poetry and even song,  in not just English but Old Scots and Gaelic too – but don’t worry, we’ll be translating as we go!

Plus, the tales don’t just stand alone – Moray will be tying them into the big picture, of the great historical events and forces which shaped our wonderful capital over the centuries.

On Mondays, we’ll explore the topmost section of the Royal Mile, namely Lawnmarket and Castlehill, adding the vistas of the Castle Esplanade as summer building works allow.

On Tuesdays it’s the turn of the central section, the very heart of the old Scottish state, from St. Giles’ Cathedral to the Tron Kirk.

On both tours, the tales will be coming thick and fast; join us, and let Auld Reekie beguile you even more than you thought possible!
