Isle of Jura OdysseyLuxury 3 day private tour - prices from £850
Rugged. Secluded. Hospitable. Wild. Heart-achingly beautiful. If there is one island which can distil the spirit of Scotland’s far west into a single place, it is the legend that is the Isle of Jura. Escape the city for a spell of pure Hebridean tranquility…
The Isle of Jura is truly one of the jewels of the romantic Hebrides – one of Europe’s last wildernesses, with mountains, glacier-carved, standing like sentinels for the western seaboard. And red deer – more than twenty for every person on the island, Scotland’s greatest, pureblooded stags and hinds. But as well as nature at its wildest, Jura is a community too of just over 200 people, and as warm and welcoming a one as you will ever find. Jura’s main village, Craighouse, nestles below the famous Paps of Jura, and is the hub of the island, with Jura’s world-famous whisky distillery, plus the hotel and shop, all within yards of one another. Just up the island’s single road is the gorgeous, tranquil beach of Corran Sands; further yet are the hamlets of Lagg and Tarbert, then the literary legend of Barnhill Cottage, where George Orwell finished his prophetic novel ‘1984’. Finally and most remotely comes the tip of the island, with the whirlpool of Corrievreckan, famed in Gaelic legend.
Our tour begins at your accommodation in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Stirling (or other central belt locations) and uses our luxury hybrid EV sedan, which can accommodate up to three adult guests or a family of up to four. We’ll make our way into the west, (via Stirling if starting in Edinburgh) seeing the famous Loch Lomond, before stopping at the beautiful and historic village of Inveraray in Argyll. In the afternoon we’ll continue through Argyll, and can show you sights such as the Hill of Dunadd, ancient seat of the Kings of Dalriada. Or, nature lovers might wish to catch sight of our new beaver colony in Knapdale. Following the lovely Crinan Canal, we’ll turn off to the picturesque village of Tayvallich, from where you’ll make the thrilling crossing direct to Jura, on Nicol Mackinnon’s superb passenger RIB ferry, which seats just 12. (note – ferry runs late March to late September, CalMac ferry option at other times).
You’ll arrive to be met by our good friends on Jura, just in time for a hearty dinner before perhaps a walk by the shore and bed at your choice of hotel, B+B or self-catering accommodation. You can choose to go independently on the island, or we can follow on with our vehicle to be your guides to Jura.
The next day is yours to relax with and do as you please in the tranquility of Jura. You might wish to tour the distillery and explore the world of single-malt whisky; or perhaps you’ll want to stroll on Corran Sands. You may wish to experience Corrievreckan for yourself on a boat trip; or maybe you’ll want to rent bicycles and pedal up the ‘one road’ to Barnhill or beyond? Or would you like to take a full island tour, perhaps calling in at remote Ardlussa, where Alicia, Claire and Georgina will show you the secrets of Jura’s new elixir, its wonderful botanic gin? Whatever you choose, busy or relaxed, the unique tranquility of Jura will be seeping into you!
In the evening, Craighouse is again yours, for dinner and who knows, maybe a dram and a tune in the always-lively hotel bar.
On the third day of the tour, again activities are yours to choose before returning to the mainland either on the passenger ferry or on the luxurious M.V. Finlaggan, Cal-Mac’s vehicular route from Islay to Kennacraig. You’ll be back at your accommodation by close of day, with a stock of new memories to treasure, and perhaps you might already be planning your next trip to the Hebrides!
